How Advanced Technology Is Evolving Forklift Operations

SEnS+ Smart Environment Sensor Plus® pedestrian detection technology used on a 3-Wheel Electric Forklift in warehouse environment

Whether you’re working in a bustling warehouse or distribution center, it’s important for your operators to not only remain productive but also be aware of their surroundings to minimize potential risks. Imagine a forklift equipped with smart technology that detects objects and pedestrians while actively assisting your operators. Enter Toyota’s SEnS+ Smart Environment Sensor Plus®.

SEnS+ Smart Environment Sensor Plus® is an advanced pedestrian and object detection system developed by Toyota for forklifts. It uses a combination of stereoscopic cameras and AI technology to enhance awareness by helping operators detect potential obstacles and pedestrians.

To shed light on how these innovations work in real-world operations, Kaushik Ravichandran, Product Planning Manager at Toyota Material Handling, provided additional information in the Q&A below on SEnS+ Smart Environment Sensor Plus®.

How Does SEnS+ Smart Environment Sensor Plus® Work?

SEnS+ can detect objects and pedestrians within a detection range of up to 32 feet in the rear of the forklift, depending on environmental conditions. Toyota’s engineers designed this range based on typical warehouse and distribution center layouts to balance early detection with practical operational needs—giving operators ample time to react while minimizing false alerts.

SEnS+ is designed to minimize the impact on productivity. Using dynamic zoning and only engaging when necessary, SEnS+ supports the operation without frequent unnecessary slowdowns.

Dynamic zoning refers to the system’s ability to adjust the detection zone based on the forklift’s speed and direction. For example, at higher speeds, the detection area expands, and the system may slow the forklift sooner. This intelligent zoning ensures that forklift movement is responsive and optimized for operational efficiency.

Which Toyota Forklift Models Are SEnS+ Smart Environment Sensor Plus® Compatible?

SEnS+ is currently available on select Toyota forklift models, specifically the 3-Wheel Electric ForkliftCore Electric Forklift, and Toyota’s Integrated Electric Pneumatic Forklifts. Availability may vary, so it’s recommended to check with your authorized Toyota dealer for the most up-to-date compatibility.

How Have Customers Reacted to Toyota's SEnS+ Smart Environment Sensor Plus®

Customer feedback has been largely positive. Many operators and warehouse managers appreciate the added operator assistance and peace of mind it brings. The system is particularly valued in high-traffic environments where pedestrian and forklift interaction is common.

Adient Global, a global automotive supplier, utilizes both SEnS Smart Environment Sensor® and SEnS+ Smart Environment Sensor Plus® throughout its fleet. Learn what benefits they have seen in their operation by adding these pedestrian detection systems to their forklifts.
