How to Alleviate Congestion in Ports Using Toyota Container Handling Equipment

Consumer demands for fast delivery have wide impacts across the supply chain. While U.S. warehouses grow to accommodate the speed of order fulfillment expected by consumers, the arrival of international goods to U.S. ports and increased containers needing to be unloaded is a growing challenge facing terminals. What are port managers to do when they are handling more containers than ever before?

Increased congestion in terminal handling equipment operations can cause long delays in fulfillment if not planned for effectively. Operation managers must have the correct equipment on hand to unload, and, importantly, organize unloaded containers.

As with any operation that aims to store and ship goods, the difficulty with increased containers in a port comes down to space. Where do ports put thousands of new container volumes? When a 24,000 TEU ship is set to hit ports in the near future, that’s a question that can seem daunting to port managers. Luckily, there are container handling solutions that can meet the challenges of increasing throughput, alleviating congestion, and helping storage grow upward instead of outward.

Reach Stackers and Container Handlers Can Help Relieve Port Congestion

The latest generation of trucks has been specially designed to alleviate congestion, like Toyota’s Reach Stacker, which allows operators to stack standard containers as many as five high and three deep. This capability makes the fleet excellent for transitioning from a port offloading area to a railyard.

Toyota’s Loaded Container Handler capacity meets hard-to-combat weight challenges, with its maximum capacity of 90,000 pounds. A maximum lift speed of 47 feet per minute facilitates enviable port efficiency.

High Capacity Large Forklifts for More Efficient Unloading

To alleviate the pains of port congestions, it is also important to incorporate the movement of containers on ships. Helping port managers meet the challenges of unloading ships and organizing containers onboard, Toyota’s specialized THD Roll-on, Roll-off model can navigate tight-fitting needs. With a compact design, specialized low mast, and overall height, these trucks are ideal for maneuvering ro-ro cargo inside the tight confines of a ship or moving products on or off vessels. If needed, the rear counterweight can be removed to facilitate safe, easy movement of the vehicle to the interior of the ship via crane. The counterweight can then be reinstalled quickly when the unit is inside the ship hull.

Each of these solutions are engineered to meet the challenges of port congestion and to ensure that port managers help their facilities remain the solid foundation of the U.S. supply chain. And while the ever-growing influx of shipping containers isn’t expected to slow, ports can be well-equipped to unload even the largest ship, stack TEU’s high and deep, and distribute in the most effective way when they use the right container handlers.
